Version 5

Let me introduce you to the latest and greatest version of my site. I guess this makes it Joel Bradbury v5.0. So what’s changed?

In Short : Everything

The lifeline of my sites have gone something like this :

  • Static – just basic flat html (everybody’s got to start somewhere)
  • Wordpress – its quick and does what most people need
  • Custom PHP – sounded like a good idea at the time (not so much later on)
  • Jekyll – a super cool github/ruby static site generator. It had serious geek points but as I’m really an Expression Engine developer ..
  • Expression Engine – well why not, I am an EE developer by day.

Why Expression Engine?

Do I seriously need to answer this? As Simon Collinson quite succinctly summed up in his presentation at EECI2009 10 Years of Quiet Revolution, EE is becoming the platform of choice for developers everywhere. It does what it needs to, then gets the hell out of the way.

I was introduced to EE nearly 10 months ago when I started work at View Creative. Since then through using it on many client projects both my personal experience with the platform, and the developer community around it, has come on leaps and bounds.

What’s the Plan?

Right now the site can be split up into two distinct sections, the Journal section (or channel in EE2 parlance) and the Addon section.

Addons

All my publicly available addons are available here, along with documentation (such as exists) and usage examples for each. I also keep all my publicly available expression engine addons on my Github and that’s a good place to keep track of any ongoing development.

Journal

I don’t know if Journal is the best name for it. I’m going for something more than a blog in content, things that I find of use etc, but not what I’ve had for dinner – that’s what twitter’s for.
